STRAWBERRY JAM 2024
DETAILS
PROGRAM
Strawberry Theatre Workshop is proud to announce the program for the 2024 Strawberry Jam. Now in its third year, SJAM is a Directors Festival—a unique play festival that puts directors at the center of development and creation. In addition to this opportunity for directors, SJAM24 employs 28 local actors, stage managers, designers, and builders in the largest professional arts event of its kind on Capitol Hill.
SJAM24 runs three weeks ONLY at 12th Ave Arts. Each director has showings for a single week during Thu-Fri-Sat at 7:30pm, June 13-29.
The directors featured in SJAM24 are all Artistic Directors of small companies in Seattle. Christie Zhao is Artistic Director of Yun Theatre, a bicultural, experimental company that examines the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies. Leah Adcock-Starr is Artistic Director of Off Road Shakespeare, a creator of free theatre productions for non-traditional spaces and unhoused communities. Greg Carter is the Artistic Director of Strawshop, a 20-year neighborhood theatre committed to being the people's place of aspiration.
June 13-14-15: Christie Zhao directs "Passage" by Christopher Chen
"Christopher Chen is a San Francisco–based playwright whose works examine the hidden psychological patterns beneath complex systems of power. Chen combines naturalism and the absurd within shifting kaleidoscopic structures."--United States Artists
June 20-21-22: Greg Carter directs "Albert's Bridge" by Tom Stoppard and "The Author's Voice" by Richard Greenberg
"Stoppard's work invariably demands much from its audiences and credits them with the capacity to learn. They must come prepared to laugh and to ponder the gravest of thoughts. If they do, they will find themselves not just intrigued and enlightened, but also moved and enlivened, with all their switches flicked on and buzzing."--Salon
Jun 27-28-29: Leah Adcock-Starr directs "Athena" by Gracie Gardner
"Athena by Gracie Gardner captures the intense emotions and baffling contradictions of being a teenage girl, refracting them through competitive fencing."--Exeunt Magazine
MISSION
Strawberry Jam is a three-week arts festival dedicated to providing local directors with the opportunity to grow their craft through practice. Motivated by an observation that Seattle's outstanding acting and playwriting communities are fueled by experimental forums not available to directors, SJAM was born in 2022 as a unique public workshop with the director at its center. Now in its third year, SJAM features veteran and emerging artists alike, working with texts ranging from classics to original works. For its audience, the event is a wide-ranging celebration of styles, visions, and voices packed into nine nights of relentless energy at 12th Ave Arts... All that makes a Strawberry Jam.
