FELLOW PASSENGERS
DETAILS
In a fortuitous turn of events, Strawshop is proud to announce that "Fellow Passengers"—originally scheduled at Book-It Repertory Theatre—opens December 1 for a four-week revival at it’s original home: Strawberry Theatre Workshop. Told in the narrative style that Book-It made famous in Seattle, “Passengers” is every page of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol performed by just three actors, who bring over fifty characters to the stage.
Directed by Rhonda J Soikowski and adapted by Strawshop Artistic Director Greg Carter, the play debuted in our first season at Richard Hugo House in 2004. The 2023 version was in pre-production when Book-It abruptly suspended operations last June. Now, with the same cast Soikowski originally planned, “Passengers” breathes life again on Capitol Hill.
Strawshop favorites Amy Thone (Frost/Nixon, Leni, Our Town) and Galen Joseph Osier (Our Country's Good, Prelude to a Kiss, The Memorandum), team with Shermona Mitchell (Co-Artistic Director of Sound Theatre Company, and TPS Gregory Award winner for The Last Days of Judas Iscariot) to perform the play with live music by keyboardist Ayako Okano (Vicious Petals, Tsubaki).
"Passengers" is a fully staged telling of one of the most important stories ever written. It was the second-ever creation of Strawberry Theatre Workshop in 2004, when Strawshop became the newest resident professional theatre on Seattle's Capitol Hill. It was a critical sensation then, earning accolades from sources as diverse as the Seattle Times and The Stranger. Each noted the freshness of the script, and the unexpected pleasure of hearing Dickens at his satiric best.
—Chris Comte, on the drama website, SeattleActor.com wrote,
"this evocative, thoughtfully realized production is bound to elicit as much surprise as delight."
—The Stranger's Annie Wagner called Fellow Passengers
"unconventional and surprisingly smart."
—Misha Berson of the Seattle Times highlighted a full-page Sunday column on Charles Dickens' influence in America with a photograph of Todd Jefferson Moore in the play's joyful last scene. Berson praised the whole production for its "lean, fierce story-telling" and specifically recommended Fellow Passengers as a Critic's pick in an appearance on KUOW-FM.
Celebrate this revival with us. Immerse yourself in the world’s most well traveled ghost tale—the story you’ve known your whole life, but have never seen performed in its entirety.
