Frost/Nixon
DETAILS
"The choice to cast all women does a service to the story. Having a woman play Nixon—visibly as a woman—doesn't allow the audience to dismiss the president's cunning and cruelty as an unfortunate side effect of his masculinity. We're trained to believe that ambition is good, and that it's an intrinsic part of manliness. Having a woman actor say stuff like "When the president does it, that means it is not illegal" denies Nixon any built-in sympathy. He's not just a guy being a guy. He's a power-hungry, self-serving boss who abused his power in order to protect his friends."
— Rich Smith, The Stranger
"It's great that these actresses get to play these meaty, traditionally male roles but what you should focus on is how each of them are simply the best people for the roles. And what they create for us is a thrilling game of cat and mouse where the role of the cat keeps changing."
— Jay Irwin, Broadway World
"A must-see for appreciators of political dramas and because of its uncanny relevance to contemporary American politics, Frost/Nixon offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the titular characters and their supporting teams as both sides grapple over Nixon’s presidential legacy and his involvement in the infamous Watergate break-in, documenting the conflicting paths of two bitter adversaries and the deep-seated respect they develop for one another over the course of their conflict."
— Robert Horton, Drama in the Hood
"Sort of intellectual ‘Rocky.’ ”
— Peter Morgan, playwright
Three years after the Watergate scandal ended his presidency, Richard Nixon agreed to break his silence in a series of interviews with up-and-coming British broadcaster David Frost. Behind-the-scenes it was a battle of egos for the upper hand in controlling history, but as the cameras rolled, the world was riveted by a remarkably honest exchange between one man who has lost everything and another with everything to gain.
Alexandra Tavares, Amy Thone, and Sarah Harlett lead an all-female cast in Peter Morgan's docudrama of corruption, obstruction, and blind ambition.
